Paxton IL

Originally named both “Prairie City” and then “Prospect City”, the town of Paxton was founded in 1859.  Named after Sir Joseph Paxton, who, at the time was the largest shareholder of the Illinois Central Railroad.  Due to its high elevation rate, this same railroad would later dig underneath the town so the train could move swiftly throughout the area.  Today, Paxton is known for its rich historical content and home restoration.  Many homeowners have won prestigious awards for the upkeeping of the houses that were built in the late 19th century. 


Parks and Recreation of Paxton Illinois

Paxton has many quaint and meticulously well – kept parks in town that showcase the community that the residents find so much pride in.  Within these parks are a top – of – the – line dog park, a community pool, beautiful picnic pavilions and a civic center.  The parks are a perfect example of the charm that Paxton has to offer.  There are also many programs that the children in the town can participate in, including basketball, soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, football, karate and more.  


Paxton Illinois School/Health/Transportation

The children in Paxton attend school in the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Community Unit School District 10.  There are 1,380 students in the district, collectively, in two elementary, one middle and on high school.  The University of Illinois is also located a short 30 minutes from town.  A part of the illustrious BIG 10 Conference, the university is known for its engineering program as well as its in depth research.  Also located in Champaign is Parkland College, which has over 180 programs for students to choose from.   

Paxton is served by Gibson Area Hospital, located 20 minutes from town in next door Gibson.  The hospital specializes in emergency services, obstetrics, women’s services and surgical care, amongst other quality services.  Residents that need to get out of town can fly to either O’Hare International or Dallas Fort – Worth from the University of Illinois - Willard Airport.  Once at these airports, passengers can get to anywhere in the world.  When traveling doesn’t require a flight, travelers can take the Amtrak out of nearby Rantoul.


Shopping/Dining Options in Paxton Illinois

There are wonderful family restaurants throughout Paxton that are both new and trendy as well as older staples of the community.  Pueblo Lindo has been a go – to for residents for quite some time and serves authentic Mexican that can’t be beat, while Just Hamburgers is known to residents as having the best burgers in the area.  Monical's, a well – known chain in the area, has been a popular restaurant for all families for both pizza and sandwiches.  For those looking for restaurants with a trendy side, look no further than Harvest Ale House and the Humble Hog.

Paxton is home to wonderful antique shops.  Both The Kegley House, Robin's Country Crossroads Antiques and Mena's Mercantile offer guests an opportunity to find unique antiques from home goods, to décor and even costumes.  Cheesecloth and Buttermilk is a gift shop where shoppers can find hand – made home décor and floral accessories.  Other shops around the Paxton area offer a variety of goods for residents.  When looking for national retailers that sell clothing for everyone in the family, home goods, jewelry, etc., Market Place Shopping Center is a short drive in Champaign.
