Urbana

Originally settled in 1822, the city of Urbana was originally known as “Big Grove”.  When Champaign County was officially adapted in 1833, the city officially became Urbana, named after Urbana, Ohio.  It has been the county seat of Champaign County since 1833.

Urbana Illinois Parks and Recreation

There are over 20 parks throughout Urbana and they offer endless amenities, such as dog parks, tot lots, athletic courts, trails, disc golfing, boating, fishing, and much more.  There are also two swimming pools located in town, Crystal Lake Family Aquatic Center and Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center.  Both facilities are open to the public and offer lessons to those of all ages.  The city also prides itself in its many fitness and wellness opportunities and classes, as well as its annual runs throughout the year.

There are many wonderful activities for the whole family located on the University of Illinois campus.  Two of the most popular are the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures and the Arboretum.  Both activities are wonderful for members of the whole family to spend time together throughout the year.  There are also three golf courses located in town, with the University of Illinois Golf Course being open to the public.

School/Health/Transportation of Urbana Illinois

Urbana School District 116 serves the children living in Urbana.  The district contains 7 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school and has a total of 4,426 students.  It is considered to be in the top fifteen most diverse districts in the state. Urbana is also home to The University of Illinois, along with its neighbor, Champaign.  It is often considered to be one of the top 50 public universities in the country and is a part of the highly regarded BIG 10 Conference.  It is most known for its engineering program and its correlating research.  Parkland College is also located next door in Champaign.  It enrolls about 18,000 students annually.

There are two main hospitals that serve the residents in Urbana: Carle Foundation Hospital and OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center.  Both of the hospitals offer their patients a state-of-the-art Emergency Room, birthing clinic, cancer center, and more.  For those traveling out of the state, the University of Illinois – Willard Airport will take you to both O’Hare International and Dallas Fort – Worth.  From these airports, passengers can get anywhere in the world.  Residents can also travel by using the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, located throughout Urbana, or the Amtrak, which is located next door Champaign.

 Urbana Illinois Shopping/Dining

Urbana has many wonderful restaurants that boast both a diverse menu and exceptional service. Restaurants such as Black Dog and The Courier Cafe offer classic American dinner and breakfast, respectively.  For a more modern take on American cuisine, look no further than Silver Creek, which serves everything from Filet Mignon to Scallop Risotto.  Both Huaraches and Timpones offer diners authentic experiences with extensive drink menus to compliment the food.

Located near campus, Market at the Square is a one-of-a-kind farmer’s market that attracts hundreds of shoppers every weekend in the spring through the fall.  Also located downtown are wonderful, unique galleries such as Heartland Gallery, Internationally Galleries, and Wind, Water and Light Gallery.  Market Place Shopping Center is located in neighboring Champaign and contains stores such as Gap, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Carter’s, along with other high-end national retailers.
