Radio Maria

Category: Spanish, Breakfast & Brunch, Creole & Cajun

119 N Walnut St, Champaign IL    217-398-7729

Looking for that urban/antique feel? Then you're at the right place!  Exposed brick, high ceiling and colorful...this unique restaurant is divided into two different dining areas;  One that serves more "traditional" entrees' and another larger one (where their bar is located) that serves a predominately tapas menu. It's the perfect place for "date night".    If you're a "drinks over dinner" person...then this is your place!  Order The Wheel....a 3.5 oz shot of each of their beers on tap, many of which are darker crafted ales- that are very tasty and have a higher alcohol content.  Try Sunday Brunch as well!  You won't be disappointed.

Big Grove Tavern

Catagory:  New American, Pubs, Breakfast & Brunch

1 E Main St., Champaign IL   217-239-3505

My office is in the same building as Big Grove.  Just a one floor elevator ride to the 5 O'Clock Somewhere hangout.  Try sitting on the east side of the huge bar where you will see a great view of people walking by and traffic hustling through the city.  Nice gathering  place for .business or pleasure, with a wonderful outdoor eating area.  A truly upscale tavern with amazing food...and all the food is locally sourced!  Order up a bar snack ( the gourmet popcorn in a small bucket) comes to you free.   Move onto specialty drinks and Deviled Eggs paired with pickled Pepper Relish or Seasoned French Fries. Other recommended dishes:  Veggie Mac & Cheese, Fried Brussel Sprouts, Bistro Filet, Free Range Roasted Chicken & a Wedge Salad.  I recommend this place to all my friends and anyone visiting from out of town.

Destihl Restaurant & Brew Works

Category:  New American, Gluten Free, Breakfast & Brunch

301 N. Neil St, Champaign IL   217-356-0301

If you want a place with lots of options and great food....then checkout Destihl!  Nice place for some local beer and casual bites. My favorite foods to order are:  Beer Battered Asparagus, Stone Oven Pizza, Jambalaya, Dijon Chicken and lots of Champaign beer. A Go-To place for family & out of town newbies.

Dublin O"Neil's

Category:  Irish

301 N Neil St, Champaign IL   217-531-1152

What is amazing about this Irish Pub is their incredible, signature desserts!  My favorites are Apple & Jameson Crumble and Flourless Chocolate Cake. You won't be able to finish these large portions without help.  Not sure if you want a late breakfast or early lunch?  They have both covered with their signature brunch menu and full Irish Breakfast for "late risers", all day.  The Sheperd's Pie and Braised Beef Ribs will make your mouth water!  One of my favorite bars to watch the U of I games, or just grab a beer after work.

Bacaro Wine Lounge

Category:  New American, Italian, Lounges

32 E Chester St, Champaign IL      217-398-6982

This is a fine dining restaurant in Champaign.  Upscale, but you can feel completely comfortable going there in jeans and tennis shoes.  They offer a great wine selection, and half price wines on Sunday.  Budget your stomach space for the Pan Roasted Sea Bass, Grilled Rabbit Loin, Spaghetti Carbonara....then top off your experience with Maple Cheesecake!  Make sure you are carrying a crisp $100 bill when you walk in the door.

Seven Saints

Category:  Traditional American , Pubs, Lounges

32 E Chester St, Champaign IL         217-315-7775

Sliders are what this place is all about!  My favorite slider is the Black Jack Slider with a bowl of Tomato Bisque Soup.  They have a great selection of spirits, wine, cocktails and even more good food.  This is one of my favorite lunch and casual dining establishments.  Overall:  Great Food, Reasonable Prices and good ambiance.

Esquire Lounge

Category:  Lounges, Pizza

106 N Walnut St, Champaign IL         217-398-5858

When I'm not in boating season, it is a tradition for me and my friends to have lunch at noon every Saturday in the month.  Many people grew up in this bar throwing and stomping on the free peanuts.  If you go to this bar 20 or 30 years plus, the management may even put your nameplate on a swivel chair once you've passed. Hone your pool skills and watch your favorite teams play on the many TV screens available.  I always ask for the menu...even though I know it by heart.  For sandwiches I make the last second decision between the Ribeye Steak, Polish Sausage & the BLT.   My appetizer choices are the Fried Broccoli and Asian Dumplings.  I make up my own pizza choice (green pepper with extra onions).  Their 7 Pizza Choices are fantastic, but I just choose to be different...and being a regular, they let me get by with it.

Boltini Lounge

Boltini Lounge

211 N Neil St, Champaign, IL 61820         (217) 378-8001

Oh my  God!  My go to bar. Send me a cab after two of their fabulous martini’s as I down the tomato soup with vodka and grilled cheese.  The crab cakes are to die for. Show up for “Tuesday Night Trivia” or host your own party/gathering like I have hosted my famous BBC parties. Best you not ask what that stands for. Date night or night out with just the boys or girls can be really fun here.

Category: Latin American

6 E Columbia Ave, Champaign, IL 61820   (217) 352-7467

The decor is cozy and warm, with unique items that give it an authentic ethnic feel. I have been very pleased with the wine selection. Food is artistically displayed and delicious. My top favorites: Red Skin Mashed Potatoes, Coconut-Crusted Shrimp with Orange-Jalapeno dipping sauce, Broiled Tilapia, Hanger Steak Asada with Fajita vegetables, Pepian sauce,  and last but definitely not least, the Pico De Gallo. A Great place for a lunch or dinner - with the office or friends.

Category: Asian Fusion, Sushi Bars

1 E Main St, Champaign, IL 61820   (217) 531-1166

Known for sushi Mondays and weekday lunch buffets.  A great place for birthday dinners and other celebrations, with wonderful patio seating. My favorite small plates are the Kurobuta Pork Belly Tacos, Gyoza (japanese style potstickers with chicken, edamame & vegetables). My favorite entrees are the Angus Beef Stir Fry and The Big Roll (their special house roll), it's amazing and the name doesn't lie, it's huge.   I can never go in there without ordering the edamame. Try it, you will like it.
