New Year's Eve Events in Champaign/Urbana!

This Saturday marks the last day of 2016. Celebrate all that happened this past year and all you have to look forward to for 2017 this weekend. There are many incredible New Year's Eve events planned for December 31st throughout the Champaign-Urbana area. Check out these great events for you to enjoy with your family during the day or for an adult night out on the town.

Noon Year's Eve

Date: Saturday, December 31st

Time: 9:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Location: Children’s Discovery Museum (101 East Beaufort Street, Normal)

Cost: $2 per member, $9 per non-member

Your kids do not have to stay up until midnight to ring in the New Year! Head to the Children’s Discovery Museum for a special countdown to noon! There will be a confetti blast! Also, enjoy fun activities, arts and crafts, face painting, noise makers and more. Register HERE.

 

Party Like It’s 1900! New Year’s Day Noon Day Celebration!

Date: Saturday, December 31st

Time: 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Location: Museum of the Grand Prairie (950 North Lombard Street, Mahomet)

Learn all about the history of New Year’s Eve celebrations and traditions, such as resolutions, the story of Baby New Year and Father Time, and more. Party like it’s 1900 with music, snacks, games, and crafts popular at that time. There will also be a balloon drop at noon!

Breakfast With Santa

Holiday Showcase

Location: Allerton Park & Retreat Center (515 Old Timber Road, Monticello)

Come to the beautiful Allerton Mansion for a day of festivities. The mansion is decorated with holiday cheer. Find unique gifts for everyone on your list from the artisans and businesses selling their products, crafts, and baked goods. There will be tours of the mansion from 11:30 am until 3:30 pm. Fill your bellies on complimentary cookies, tea, and coffee. Finish off your day with a carriage ride on the grounds. A special lunch buffet is also available for an additional charge. Holiday In Whoville

Champaign/Urbana Folk and Roots Festival!

Enjoy some of the best national, regional, and local folk musicians at the 8th Annual C-U Folk & Roots Festival. Downtown Urbana will be filled with music on Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 through Saturday, November 5th, 2016. There will be over 80 folk performances and related activities during the 3 days of festivities. With performances, workshops, dances, jams, singalongs, and more, there is plenty for you and your family to enjoy. This grassroots festival promotes the tradition and history of folk music while celebrating what is new and unique in the genre. Here is all the information you need to make the most of your time at the Folk & Roots Festival:

Perfomances!

Your ears will be filled with fantastic musical performances by artists from around the country. A wide variety of folk music will be on display, including blues, bluegrass, alt-country, swing, and more. There will also be Latin folk music, Native American folk music, and music for kids!

 

Workshops!

One of the best things about the C-U Folk & Roots Festival are the workshops that community members can participate in. Whether you are a beginner musician or more advanced, there are great workshops for you. Learn to play the banjo, fiddle or harmonica. Take a workshop about the history of women in blues or on narrative word-craft.

Dances!

Join in more fun by putting on your dancing shoes and participating in the numerous dances going on all weekend long. Learn traditional English and Irish dance. Square dance or try your feet at the contra dance. Whether swing dancing or wanting to participate in the family dance, you will have lots of fun at these activities.

 

Jams, Singalongs, and Other Events!

Musicians can grab their instruments and join in the jam sessions. With a variety of musical genres available to jam out to, enjoy playing with professional musicians and other people from your community. Along with the jam sessions, there are also sing-a-longs available with some of the performing artists, a great opportunity for the kids to join in the musical fun!

It's MIDTOWN SUNDAZE in Champaign!

Enjoy some frightful fun with the whole family at the 2016 Midtown Sundaze: Halloween Extravaganza! Join the Champaign Center Partnership and area businesses on Sunday, October 23rd, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Boneyard Creek Second Street Basin in Champaign.

Celebrate Halloween early at this great FREE family event. Explore the Midtown Shops and the beautiful Boneyard Creek area at Midtown Sundaze. There are so many fun activities planned for everyone, including games and arts and crafts. Children will receive candy at each station throughout the park!

 

Starting at 2:00 pm, our favorite local storyteller Kathleen Brinkmann will be sharing spooky interactive stories to get you in the Halloween spirit. There also will be face painting by Wild Style Design.

 

Be sure to wear your best Halloween costume! The afternoon of fun will culminate in a kids’ costume contest. There are three categories for judging, including Most Creative, Spookiest, and Best Group costume. Prizes will be awards to the winner in each category! Parents and pets are encouraged to wear costumes too!

HAUNTED HOUSES

 

Midway of Madness

The family fun setting of the Champaign County Fairgrounds (1302 North Coler, Urbana) has been transformed into a haunted carnival! Overrun with terrifying zombies, crazy carnies, and scary monsters, the fairgrounds have become the site of the Midway of Madness Haunted Barn! This awesome haunted site is open every Friday and Saturday, as well as Halloween night, from 7:00 pm until 11:00 pm. Tickets are $12 per person.

 

The Freak Show & The Haunt at Bone Saw Mill

Put your fears to the test and check out this great haunted attraction that has two terrifying sites! Check out the all new Haunt at Bone Saw Mill or the chilling Freak Show, a brand new attraction available this year. This attraction is open every weekend now through Halloween. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Tickets for the Freak Show and the Haunt at Bone Saw Mill are $15 for admission to one. If you are truly daring and want to check out both, tickets at $20 for admission to both or get truly festive and pay $28 to also receive a T-shirt and fast pass! Swing by 601 County Fair Drive in Champaign for a night of frightening fun.

 

Baldwin Asylum

This top rated haunted attraction is seriously terrifying. Be prepared to scream as you walk through the 10,000 square feet space of terror. Click HERE for dates. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the asylum stays open until 10:00 pm on weekdays and 12:00 am on the weekends. Tickets are $15 per person. Baldwin Asylum is located at 2040 Lon Drive in Rantoul.

Zombie Run

Dates: Saturday, October 15th

Times: 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm

Location: Kaufman Lake (2702 West Springfield Avenue, Champaign)

Cost: $25 per person (Resident), $37.50 per person (Non-Resident)

See if you can survive a zombie apocalypse during this fun run. Brave the 2.5 mile course filled with zombies and obstacles in the dark of the night. Luckily there are safe points along the way for some respite….if you can find them. There are different wave times as participants will be sent in groups of 20-50 throughout the night. 5 Nights of Hitch

Gruesome, Gory, and Ghastly Ghosts and Ghouls

Your entire family will love listening to ghoulish stories from some of our favorite local storytellers, including Dan Keding and Kim Sheahan as well as storytelling students from UIUC. Your kids will leave with a special bag of candy after enjoying ghost stories from around the world.

Stories from the Other Side

Location: Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum (600 South Gregory Street, Urbana)

If you are looking for a more adult ghost story experience, check out the Stories from the Other Side. This evening of storytelling will feature terrifying tales. Note, you must be 16 or older to attend this event.

 

Laser Show: Fright Light!

Spend a night “under the stars” at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium for a scary laser show. This fun show will feature music from Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Michael Jackson, Alice Cooper, and more.

 

An Evening with Poe

The works of Edgar Allan Poe are some of the most haunting. Listen to his suspenseful stories and poems while sitting in the mysterious setting of the Allerton Mansion. After the Poe readings, enjoy a candlelight tour of the Mansion. There will be a cash bar available at the event.

Here are our picks for the events we cannot miss over the next couple of weeks.

 

Friday, September 16th

Allerton Festival featuring Rusted Root: Dance the night away from 6:00 - 9:30 pm at Allerton Park & Retreat Center (515 Old Timber Road, Monticello) at the Allerton Festival. Enjoy live musical performances from 3 great groups. From 6:00 to 7:00 pm, blues and folk band Lupe Carroll will be taking the stage, followed by I-Pan, a University of Illinois student run combo steel band. At 7:30 pm, dance the night away to world renowned band Rusted Root. There will also be food and beverage available for purchase at the event. Purchase tickets in advance HERE for $15. Tickets will be $18 at the door. Children 12 and under can attend the festival for FREE!

Saturday, September 17th

Monticellobration 2016: Put on your swing shoes and head down to the Historic Courthouse Square in downtown Monticello from 10:00 am until 10:30 pm. This annual family event celebrates the town of Monticello. Enjoy delicious food as the local restaurants cook our around lunch time. There will be live swing and jazz music throughout the afternoon, with performances from Jim Markum Swing Band and the Night Hawks. Your kids will love all of the great activities including art projects, train pump cars, bubbles, and so much more! Be sure to check out the All Things Wheels car show to marvel at some amazing classic cars on display. More music will carry the festivities into the evening, including concerts from Bad Medicine and Feudin Hillbillies. Admission to this great Monticello festival is FREE!

 

GCC AMBUCS Scarecrow Festival: Celebrate the fall season from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at AMBUCS Park (1200 East University, Urbana). Spend the day at the park with your family while enjoying music and live entertainment and an automobile show. Pick up some unique gifts from the flea market. Join your kids on a hayrack or barrel train ride before heading off to play some games. The festival has no entry free though there will be a small cost for kids games.

Sunday, September 18th

7th Annual Oktoberfest: Dine on some authentic German cuisine at Crane Alley (115 West Main Street, Urbana) from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm for their annual Oktoberfest celebration. All of your favorite traditional German dishes will be served, from schnitzel and brats, to croquettes and braised cabbage. Wash down the food with one of the 6 different beers that will be offered at the outdoor beer truck. You can purchase a glass liter stein for $18 and enjoy subsequent refills for only $11. Wear your best Oktoberfest outfit and eat, drink, and be merry!

 

Urbana Art Expo: Marvel at some beautiful pieces of art during the 2nd annual Urbana Art Expo from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Urbana Civic Center (108 East Water Street, Urbana). Support local artists by attending this juried art sale and exhibition.

Saturday, September 24th

Flannel Fest: Pull out your best flannel between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm at Centennial Park (2200 West Kirby Avenue, Champaign) for some fall fun. There will be live music, food trucks, games, crafts, and so much more. Enter the mustache contest! Enjoy the Timberwork’s Lumberjack Show as they showcase their speed carving, log rolling, and axe throwing skills. Be sure to also check out the Human Mattress Dominoes! This day will be filled with lots of family fun. Admission is FREE!

Sunday, September 25th

Midtown Sundaze: Listen to some classic fairytales and fables from 2:00 until 5:00 pm at Scott Park (207 East Springfield Avenue, Champaign). Your children will have the time of their lives at this family friendly event. They can meet their favorite princesses and comic book superheroes. Every half hour, beginning at 2:15, listen to local storyteller Kathe Brinkmann tell a favorite classic children’s story. In addition, there will be face painting, crafts, games, and treats!

 

Two Great Festivals This Weekend in the Champaign/Urbana Area!

There is always something exciting going on during the summer in the Champaign/Urbana area! And this last weekend of August is no exception!!! This Friday, August 26th, and Saturday, August 27th, your family will have tons to do at one of two great festivals in our area…..the Mahomet Sangamon River Music Festival and Urbana Sweetcorn Festival!

 

Sangamon River Music Festival in Mahomet

Head over to Downtown Mahomet this Friday and Saturday for their Annual Sangamon River Music Festival. This great family friendly event features incredible live music, bags tournament, parade, carnival rides and so much more!

 

This festival takes place from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Friday evening and all day Saturday from 9:00 am to 11:30 pm. Both days you can dine on delicious food and buy crafts from the numerous vendors. Pop into the Mahomet Lion’s Beer Tent for a frothy beverage. Carnival rides will be available both days. Buy a $20 armband for unlimited rides!

 

The highlight of this festival is truly the music. Both days are jam packed with incredible live musicians and bands. Check out the headliners on Friday and Saturday night, Uncle Kracker and Phil Vassar, respectively! For a full schedule of the bands playing, click HERE

 

Saturday will have additional fun events for you and your family to enjoy. Set up along the Festival Parade route, starting at Lincoln Trails School and ending on Franklin, on Saturday morning between 9:00 am and 10:30 am. Grab a friend and enter the Bags Tournament for a chance to win cash prizes! Print out the Bags Tournament Registration and bring $40 cash at 12:30 in front of the fire station to join in the fun!

Can’t make it over to Mahomet, or want to make the most of your weekend by hitting up an additional festival?? Check out the Sweetcorn Festival in Downtown Urbana this Friday and Saturday. Dine on perfectly steamed sweetcorn, marvel at vintage cars, see your favorite bands, and much more.

 

This long running annual festival takes place from 5:00 pm to 12:00 am on Friday evening and on Saturday from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Did you know that offer 30,000 ears of corn are consumed at this festival annually?! See what the hype is about as you mow down on delicious corn provided by local farmers! If you aren’t a corn enthusiast like the rest of us, there are plenty of other incredible festival food options for you to choose from.

 

Delight your ears with the talented local, regional, and national musicians performing both days. There are 3 different music stages at the festival! In addition to the food and music, there are lots of other entertainment for you and your family during this festival. Your kids will love all the activities provided specifically for them. Fill your bellies with delicious food and your spirits with good cheer at our favorite Champaign-Urbana summer festival…..the Taste of Champaign-Urbana 2016. Head down to West Side Park this Friday and Saturday for the ultimate celebrate. Enjoy delicious food from the finest Champaign-Urbana restaurants, quench your thirst with craft beer, dance to live music, and pick up some unique arts and crafts from local artisans! Not only will you have endless fun, but by coming to this festival, you are supporting the youth in our great community! All proceeds from Taste of CU fund scholarships for local youth to learn to swim, take dance lessons, plays sports, attend camp, and so much more! Food and Beverages!

The star of this festival is truly the food! Dine on delicious menu items from 13 local restaurants and 11 food trucks! Whatever your taste buds fancy, from pizza and Chinese to burritos and BBQ, there is a food vendor that you will love! For those 21 and over, wash all the amazing food down with domestic Miller beers or beers from our favorite local brewers including Destihl, Tryptych, and JT Walker’s. Craft beer enthusiasts should be sure to hit the beer tent on Saturday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm when local breweries will be sharing the special beers that they created specifically for this year’s Taste of CU.

Kids Activities!

Pie Run!

Registration for the Pie Run might be over but you can cheer the runners on along the 3.14 mile course starting at 6:00 pm on Saturday! Make sure you are there at the end line to see those participants who brave the Flying Pies finishing lane! Additional Pie Run Information.

 

Monarch Summer!

Visit the butterfly booth to learn all there is to know about monarch butterflies! There are plant giveaways, activities for children, and great information butterfly migration and pollination.

Champaign/Urbana Days this Weekend!

Celebrate all that the Champaign/Urbana community has to offer at CHAMPAIGN-URBANA DAYS!!! This amazing family-fun event is occurring this weekend on Friday, August 12th and Saturday, August 13th at the recently renovated Douglass Park.

 

Start the festivities off on Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The kids will love all of the activities planned! From face painting and joyful bubbles to touch-a-truck and  inflatables, there are activities galore. Put your creativity to the test with Cardboard Car Making! “Ride” your automotive creation over to the “Drive-In” movie where you will see the great summertime classic The Sandlot. The screening will begin at dusk.

 

Be sure to get some rest on Friday night because the fun continues all day Saturday at CU Days! Cheer your team onto victory as they compete in the CU Days Basketball Tournament. See all the local talent in our community at the CUperStars vocal competition and CU Day Fashion & Talent Show. Activities are planned for people of all ages, including the Senior Luncheon and Bingo at Douglass Community Center!  There will also be live entertainment all day with performances by Deshawn Music, Kevin Cory, and Young One.

 

Spend the weekend at the park while enjoying some delicious food and tons of fun activities for the family at Champaign-Urbana Days!
