Complete the Bucket List Challenge at Champaign Parks!

Spend time in the beautiful summer sun as you “romp and stomp” at all the playgrounds in Champaign! The Champaign Park District is hosting a Bucket List Challenge to encourage residents to explore the amazing park facilities found in our city. Now through the end of September, have fun throughout Champaign and be entered to win prizes!  

 

Download the Bucket List Challenge Brochure and start exploring all of the 29 incredible playgrounds (listed below) located throughout the community. Once you have checked off all the buckets, send or drop off the completed brochure to any Champaign Park District facility  at the end of the month to be entered in a drawing for awesome prizes!

Celebrate Freedom in Champaign/Urbana!

Celebrate Independence Day throughout the Champaign/Urbana area! It is time to show off your patriotic pride as we celebrate our nation’s founding and the freedoms that we enjoy everyday as citizens of this great country! There are too many fun activities planned for this 4th of July weekend for us to list them all! But, there are 2 annual community festivals that cannot be missed!  Head to Rantoul and Champaign this holiday to have the ultimate patriotic fun!

 

RANTOUL

Rantoul Freedom Celebration

When: Thursday, June 29th - Tuesday, July 4th

Where: Throughout Rantoul

Rantoul offers a full weekend of activities to celebrate Independence Day. Enjoy a carnival in Wabash Park from Thursday through Saturday. Check out a car show on Saturday and Monster Truck Show on Sunday. The following day bring the family for more fun at the Rantoul National Aviation Center. Watch the excitement of monster trucks or participate in the 5K. There will also be food, live music, inflatables, firework display, and many more activities available all day. Wind down the holiday weekend on Tuesday with a delicious pancake breakfast sponsored by the Rotary from 7:00 am until 11:00 am. The 4th of July parade begins at 9:40 am so be sure to claim your spot to watch all the fun!

 

CHAMPAIGN

Champaign County Freedom Celebration

When: Tuesday, July 4th | 11:05 am (Parade) | 7:00 pm (Evening Program)

Where: Downtown Champaign

This amazing annual event has something for everyone to celebrate Independence Day. Start the day off participating in the Youth Run or 5K Race/Walk which takes participants along the parade route. After being active in the morning, find your spot along the parade route. The parade starts at 11:05 am and will feature great patriotic bands, live music, and much more. Finish off your celebration at the evening program which starts at 7:00 pm and will be located along Kirby Avenue. The festivities include musical entertainment, kids activities, and a great fireworks display at the end of the night.

Ride in the 1st Annual C-U Food Cruise this Saturday!

Celebrate National Bike Month and all the delicious cuisine Champaign/Urbana has to offer during the inaugural C-U Food Cruise! Grab your bike, helmet, and family and hit the road as you cruise along Champaign/Urbana tasting great bites at some of your favorite local establishments this Saturday, May 20th!

 

Everyone will ride within guided groups. No matter what your skill level or preference, there is a perfect tour for you! Select one of the following 7 tours to participate in for the C-U Food Cruise:

 

“SWEET” Tour | Champaign Family Friendly | 13.4 miles | 3 stops

“MILD” Tour | Family Friendly Beginner/Intermediate | 16.3 miles | 5 stops

“HONEY” Tour | Urbana Intermediate | 17.6 miles | 5 stops

“BUFFALO” Tour | Champaign Intermediate | 18 miles | 5 stops

“ZESTY” Tour | Urbana Advanced | 18.6 miles | 5 stops

All groups should meet at Hessel Park (1401 Grandview Drive, Champaign) at 2:00 pm. Tours will leave at 2:30 pm. Each tour will last between 3.5 to 5 hours. For rides that will be out after sunset, a bicycle light is required. Every tour will end at Jarling’s Custard (309 West Kirby Avenue, Champaign).

Grand Reopening of the Champaign County History Museum!

Come celebrate the history of our county at the Grand Reopening of the Champaign County History Museum (102 East University Avenue)! On Saturday, April 29th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, the museum will be reopening its doors after 18 months to showcase its new and improved renovations!

 

Champaign Mayor Deb Feinen will kick the festivities off at 10:00 am with a ribbon cutting. Stop by the museum throughout the day to enjoy tours, children’s crafts, balloons, and free popcorn from the beautiful Popcorn Wagon. The museum is featuring four new, interesting exhibits, including When We Went to War, Champaign County History Uncrated, A Second Home: 150 Years of Student Living at the University of Illinois, and The Art of Louise Woodroofe. Abraham Lincoln will be “visiting” with museum guests throughout the day as well.

 


The Champaign County History Museum’s mission is “to discover, collect, preserve, exhibit, study and interpret objects relating to the history of Champaign County, and to provide educational programs about the County’s heritage and the Museum’s collections.” Let’s celebrate the much deserved renovations to the museum and celebrate all that the organization does throughout the years to keep the history of our wonderful communities alive!

Celebrate some of the best films ever made at the the best films ever made at the University of Illinois College of Media’s 19th Annual Roger Ebert's Film Festival 2017! This incredible annual event is a favorite in Champaign/Urbana. The festival is taking place Wednesday, April 19th through Sunday, April 23rd at the beautiful Virginia Theatre (203 West Park Avenue, Champaign).

 

The Pulitzer Prize winning film critic Roger Ebert founded the festival in 1999 to celebrate past films that deserve more recognition. A native of Urbana and a University of Illinois graduate, Ebert believed it was important to offer the community a world class film festival every year. Now in its 19th year, the festival continues to delight audiences. Special guests, such as actors, directors, producers, and writers, attend the screenings and provide in depth panel discussions for audiences to enjoy. Check out all the films being offered at this year’s EbertFest!

Celebrate Urbana at First Fridays!

Celebrate all that the community of Urbana has to offer every month at their First Fridays! Downtown Urbana becomes a fun, free, family friendly street festival every first friday. The festival highlights local Urbana businesses, activities, performers, and more. April’s First Friday on the 7th promises to be one of the best ones yet!

 

From 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday, head to the Cohen Building (136 West Main Street) for the Revelry Market. There will be art, body care products, home goods, jewelry, and more available for purchase. Sip on a delicious cocktail by Lumen Events as you watch live performances by Dewclaw. Get a boost of energy at UIUC’s pop up booth.


The fun continues outside from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm for the Main Street Carnival. The highlight of the evening is the live performances by flow artists Satina and Michael Moxie along with special guests. Swing by the IMC for the DISRUPT art show by Ghardzadegi Art Collective. See a fashion show at H2O Salon. Try to escape within 10 minutes at the fun LabEscape. Relax with some free yoga at Amara Yoga & Arts or with acupuncture at Urbana Acupuncture. Try some wine at Pizza-M. Common Ground Food Co-op will also be offering free food and drink tastings. Take advantage of great deals throughout downtown Urbana at restaurants such as Siam Terrance and Crane Alley and stores like Bohemia and See You CD & Vinyl.
