Family Fun Easter Events Throughout Champaign-Urbana!

Easter is a few weeks away! You can get into the holiday spirit in the weeks leading up to the big day at fun events throughout the Champaign/Urbana area. There are events for everyone in the family to enjoy. Come enjoy all the Easter festivities in the communities throughout our area.

 

10th Annual Egg Hunt

Date: Saturday, April 8th

Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Location: Elks Lake Pavilion - Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve (109 South Lake of the Woods Road, Mahomet)

Cost: $5 per child

Come meet the Easter Bunny while you fill your basket with eggs. The child that finds a golden egg will win a special prize! There are 3 separate egg hunts. Children ages 0 to 3 can participate at 9:00 am. Children ages 4 to 6 can hunt at 9:30 am. The hunt for children ages 7 to 10 starts at 10:00 am. All proceeds from this event benefit the Mahomet Parks & Recreation Department Scholarship Fund. Register HERE.  

Easter Egg Hunt

Location: Pells Park (Paxton)

Cost: FREE!

The Paxton Emergency Response Services is hosting an egg hunt at Pells Park. Each child has the opportunity to find 10 eggs. There will be prizes for children children ages 2-4, 5-7, and 8-10.

 

Eggs-ploration!

Date: Saturday, April 8th

Time: 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Location: Douglass Community Center (512 East Grove Street, Champaign)

Cost: FREE!

Fill your basket with eggs at this old-fashioned hunt. The hunt is open for children 13 and under and will begin right at noon.

 

Hoppin’ Hound Egg Hunt

Date: Saturday, April 8th

Time: 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Location: Champaign Bark District (5001 West Windsor Avenue, Champaign)

Cost: FREE! (residents) | $5 per person (non-resident)

Your furry friend can get in on the Easter fun! Let your dog participate in their own egg hunt. There will be treats for dogs and their owners, family activities, pet photography, and more!

 

Sensory Egg Hunt

Date: Saturday, April 8th

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Location: Prairie Farm (2202 West Kirby Avenue, Champaign)

Cost: FREE!

This special event is for children with special needs and their siblings. The eggs will be specially designed with lights, sounds, and textures. There will be opportunities for socializing and enjoying treats after the hunt. Register HERE.  

 

Fabergé Egg Decorating Party

Date: Saturday, April 8th

Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Location: Zahn Learning Center - Spurlock Museum (600 South Gregory Street, Urbana)

Cost: $3 per person

All ages can decorate their own Fabergé eggs! Get creative as you design the papier-mâché eggs with fun embellishments. All materials will be provided.

 

Nite Lite Egg Pursuit

Date: Friday, April 14th

Time: 7:15 pm - 10:00 pm

Location: Hessel Park (1400 Valley Road, Champaign)

Cost: $10 per person

Harken back to your childhood as you participate in this adult's only flashlight egg hunt. Lite Rock 97.5 WHMS has filled the eggs with great prizes. Search for the Gold, Silver, and Bronze eggs to win spectacular prize packages.

 

2017 Egg Hunt with a Splash

The Monticello Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting their egg hunt. There are two designated areas for children 4 and under and children 5 to 10 years old.

 

27th Annual Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza

Date: Saturday, April 15th

Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Location: West Side Park (400 West University Avenue, Champaign)

Cost: FREE!

Start the morning with hayrack rides between 10:00 and 10:45 am. Then, fill up your basket with all of the eggs that you find throughout the park. There will be a special guest there as well!

 

Bunny at the Ballpark

Date: Saturday, April 15th

Time: 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Location: Illinois Field (1605 South Wright Street, Champaign)

Come cheer on the Fighting Illini as they take on Northwestern. After the game, stay for an egg hunt with the Easter Bunny!

It is officially the first day of Spring! Warmer weather is ahead and plants and flowers will soon begin to blossom. The Champaign/Urbana area is home to great outdoor recreational spots to enjoy the first couple weeks of spring and throughout the warmer months of the year. Be sure to check out our favorite spots to explore nature and have fun in the sun this spring!

 

 

Meadowbrook Park  (2808 South Race Street, Urbana)

Come discover all that Meadowbrook Park has to offer. There are great natural spaces to explore along the walking and bicycling trails. The park is dedicated to restoring habitats that are native to central Illinois. These areas include the Timpone Ornamental Tree Grove, McCullough and Douglas creek corridors, and 80 acre prairie. Spend time in the park’s plant and herb gardens, as well as the amazing Wandell Sculpture Garden. The highlight of the park is PrairiePlay, a 13,000 square foot play structure!

 

University of Illinois Arboretum (1800 South Lincoln Avenue, Urbana)

A favorite outdoor spot in the Champaign/Urbana area, the Arboretum covers 160 acres of the University of Illinois’s south campus. While it serves as a spot for university students to learn, it is open to the public to explore. Visitors love spending time in the arboretum’s numerous Gardens, which boast a wide variety of plant life. Be sure to swing by the Idea Garden and nearby Japan House. The arboretum is truly one of our area’s most peaceful and beautiful spaces to spend time outside.

 

Crystal Lake Park (206 West Park Street, Urbana)

Crystal Lake is a community park filled with spectacular amenities. Everyone in your family will find something they love in this park. Residents that enjoy spending time exploring natural landscapes should visit the Anita Purves Nature Center and wander through Busey Woods. If you prefer spending time in or on the water, be sure to check out the Family Aquatic Center for swimming or the park’s lake for boating and fishing.  This park also offers a playground and picnic areas for a family fun afternoon.

 

River Bend Forest Preserve (1602 Mid America Road, Mahomet)

Spend time in the great outdoors in this beautiful forest preserve. Covering over 280 acres, there are ample opportunities to view wildlife and marvel at the natural landscape. There are several miles of trails to enjoy throughout the forest. Visitors can also spend time on crystal clear waters on one of the preserve’s two lakes. Boating and fishing are available on both.

 

Allerton Park & Retreat Center (515 Old Timber Road, Monticello)

Allerton Park is considered one of Illinois’s Seven Wonders. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city within the 1,500+ acres included in this spectacular park. With 14 miles of hiking trails, 500 acres of contiguous forest, opportunities for bird watching, 30 acres of prairie land, and part of the Sangamon River, there is much to explore this spring. Be sure to also stop by the Formal Gardens, which houses some of the most beautiful flowers and sculptures you have ever seen.

 

Chocolate Fantasy in Downtown Monticello!

Satisfy your sweet tooth at the 14th Annual Chocolate Fantasy in historic downtown Monticello. Celebrate Valentine’s Day early with your sweetheart or have a fun evening on the town with friends on Friday, February 10th!

 

This favorite annual event in Monticello features all things deliciously chocolate! 20 businesses downtown will be offering unique and decadent chocolate concoctions from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Whether you love chocolate mousse, chocolate stout beer, or a chocolate chicken mole, there will be something to satisfy your chocolate craving. Explore all that downtown Monticello has to offer as you dine, shop, and socialize during Chocolate Fantasy.

#33 Monticello Community Unit School District 25 | Monticello

This school district received an overall Niche grade of an A. It earned top grades for academics, teachers, and health and safety. It also ranked high in the areas of clubs and activities, college readiness, and sports. Monticello Community Unit School District 25 was recognized for being the 20th Illinois school district with the best teachers!

Halloween is just around the corner! It's time to dress up your little ones as ghosts or goblins, princesses or witches, superheroes or monsters! It's important to make sure that everyone stays safe this Halloween! Follow these great safety tips during trick-or-treating:

 

  • All trick-or-treaters should walk in groups and not alone.

  • Young children should always be accompanied by their parents or another adult.

  • If you are going to be out after dark, make sure that everyone is visible in your group. Be sure to carry a flashlight. Wear light colored costumes or add reflective tape generously to costumes.

  • Costumes should fit properly to avoid any tripping hazards. Costumes should also not restrict vision.

  • Only walk while trick-or-treating. Stay on sidewalks whenever possible and only cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections. Leave bicycles or skateboards at home.

  • Review with your children the importance of watching for traffic. If you are a motorist on Halloween night, be on the look out for children.

  • Examine all of your children's candy before letting them eat any. Only keep candy that is wrapped or packaged.

There are so many to choose from it's truly hard to narrow down which ones to attend. So why not check them all out?! Here are our picks for the events we cannot miss over the next couple of weeks.

 

Friday, September 16th

Allerton Festival featuring Rusted Root: Dance the night away from 6:00 - 9:30 pm at Allerton Park & Retreat Center (515 Old Timber Road, Monticello) at the Allerton Festival. Enjoy live musical performances from 3 great groups. From 6:00 to 7:00 pm, blues and folk band Lupe Carroll will be taking the stage, followed by I-Pan, a University of Illinois student run combo steel band. At 7:30 pm, dance the night away to world renowned band Rusted Root. There will also be food and beverage available for purchase at the event. Purchase tickets in advance HERE for $15. Tickets will be $18 at the door. Children 12 and under can attend the festival for FREE!

Saturday, September 17th

Monticellobration 2016: Put on your swing shoes and head down to the Historic Courthouse Square in downtown Monticello from 10:00 am until 10:30 pm. This annual family event celebrates the town of Monticello. Enjoy delicious food as the local restaurants cook our around lunch time. There will be live swing and jazz music throughout the afternoon, with performances from Jim Markum Swing Band and the Night Hawks. Your kids will love all of the great activities including art projects, train pump cars, bubbles, and so much more! Be sure to check out the All Things Wheels car show to marvel at some amazing classic cars on display. More music will carry the festivities into the evening, including concerts from Bad Medicine and Feudin Hillbillies. Admission to this great Monticello festival is FREE!

 

GCC AMBUCS Scarecrow Festival: Celebrate the fall season from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at AMBUCS Park (1200 East University, Urbana). Spend the day at the park with your family while enjoying music and live entertainment and an automobile show. Pick up some unique gifts from the flea market. Join your kids on a hayrack or barrel train ride before heading off to play some games. The festival has no entry free though there will be a small cost for kids games.

Sunday, September 18th

7th Annual Oktoberfest: Dine on some authentic German cuisine at Crane Alley (115 West Main Street, Urbana) from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm for their annual Oktoberfest celebration. All of your favorite traditional German dishes will be served, from schnitzel and brats, to croquettes and braised cabbage. Urbana Art Expo: Marvel at some beautiful pieces of art during the 2nd annual Urbana Art Expo from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Urbana Civic Center (108 East Water Street, Urbana). Support local artists by attending this juried art sale and exhibition.

Saturday, September 24th

Flannel Fest: Pull out your best flannel between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm at Centennial Park (2200 West Kirby Avenue, Champaign) for some fall fun. There will be live music, food trucks, games, crafts, and so much more. Enter the mustache contest! Enjoy the Timberwork’s Lumberjack Show as they showcase their speed carving, log rolling, and axe throwing skills. Be sure to also check out the Human Mattress Dominoes! This day will be filled with lots of family fun. Admission is FREE!

Sunday, September 25th

Midtown Sundaze: Listen to some classic fairytales and fables from 2:00 until 5:00 pm at Scott Park (207 East Springfield Avenue, Champaign). Your children will have the time of their lives at this family friendly event. They can meet their favorite princesses and comic book superheroes. Every half hour, beginning at 2:15, listen to local storyteller Kathe Brinkmann tell a favorite classic children’s story. In addition, there will be face painting, crafts, games, and treats!

 

It’s almost time to head back to school! The quality of the local school districts within a state helps strengthen the local economy, improve home values, and creates a sense of pride. We are happy to announce that our state has made the grade.......Illinois was ranked as the #13 state with the best school districts in the country!!!

 

To determine the rankings, financial website Wallethub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia and looked at two key dimensions, School System Quality and School System Safety. Within these dimensions, 17 metrics were used to evaluate the scores. These metrics included factors such as student to teacher ratio, standardized test scores, dropout rate, percentage of certified teachers, school safety, and disciplinary incident rates. Illinois came out at the top of the class! Not only did our state rank 13th for the overall score, but the School System Quality ranking was the 14th best in the country! Our students continue to excel academically, earning the HIGHEST average SAT scores of all the states!
