Our pets are part of the family and as such need the same care and concern as we all do during the frigid winter months.  Here are some excellent tips to keep your pet safe, secure and warm:

1. Never leave your pets outdoors for very long during freezing temperatures;  A short walk to do their business or a quick jog in the backyard.

2. After a walk, make sure to wipe down your pets paws, legs and underbelly for any salt pellets or deicing chemicals that could have attached.  These can cause great damage, especially in their paws.

3. Dress up your pup!  If your dog is amenable to wearing clothes dress them in a winter jacket and paw booties to protect them when they do need to be outside.

4. Many dogs are lost during the winter months.  Make sure you have your pet collared with contact info and if possible, a microchip implanted.

5. Always check your pups paws for signs of cold weather damage such as cracked paws or bleeding pads.  If you find this has happened, make a vet appointment immediately.

6. Pets should not be left unattended in a car during the cold winter months, just as they should not be left in a car during the hot summer.  Temperatures in a vehicle will plummet quickly in this weather.

7. Keep antifreeze and other winter chemicals away from and cleaned up so your pets do not come in contact with them  These poisonous chemicals can cause a fatal reaction.

8.  Dogs love to snuggle and be warm when they are sleeping or resting.  Give them additional options for warmth during the winter.
